Monster Gallery: The Book Show

The Book Show

Last month, we were at Sculpture Square for the first time. Today, we returned for Monster Gallery‘s The Book Show.

It is an exhibition featuring diverse artists from Singapore and around the region. The theme: original works of art and crafts inspired by books and reading.

We are quiet people, so I think we appreciate today’s thin crowd (as compared to the crowd on opening night). After all, this is about reading and books, usually associated with less noise.

We loved leafing through Kenneth Loe’s artist book, and fondled Uyii’s Kerouac bag lovingly.

Reading is a private activity, and inevitably intricately sewn into your personality and sense of being. At this exhibition, we saw some works that spoke of this, and evoked the sense that reading, memory and self mix together to colour your undertakings and experiences, and perhaps your life’s work.

Tau & Epsilon‘s enchanting lamp shade might make you want to settle down next to its light and read. Some other little things we enjoyed were the ex libris plates carved by Jo (Love Sprouts), Monster Gallery’s linocut prints featuring Edgar Allan Poe, and the Alice In Wonderland plushies done by Cookie Cutter.

The Book Show is open until 28 October 2012, 6 pm.

Location: Sculpture Square, 155 Middle Road, Singapore. It is opposite Fortune Centre. Lots of car parks in the area, if you’re heading there by car. We parked at one of the NAFA campuses, where it was a short walk to the venue. Waterloo Centre, Sunshine Plaza, LaSalle and Wilkie Edge should be good too.

Update – 29 Oct
The exhibition is over; if you didn’t get a chance to visit, here are more pictures of the show.
