When Henry Congressional by Smitten Coffee closed their pop-up location at Henry Park earlier this year, there was quite a bit of dismay in this household and in our little Twitter ‘o’ sphere. The resident coffee junkie moaned about the loss of a good caffeine joint, I was sad about the pandan cake and that we didn’t get to try the fried bee hoon even once. Understandably, we were pretty thrilled when the same people behind HC started homebodies at Boat Quay, though sadly enough, recent visits to the café yielded much less joy.
And now there is Necessary Provisions. We’ve long lamented the lack of cafes in the west and NP certainly makes for a nice addition to the (dismal) list. Tucked away in Eng Kong Terrace (don’t get lost), driving is by far the most convenient way to get to the café. Street parking is available. Otherwise, it’s a long hike from the nearest bus stop. But the place is gorgeous. We loved the décor (and the tables and the chairs and the flowers and the mint cups).
We visited on a Tuesday evening for dinner. For food, we ordered the luncheon meat fried rice and the grilled prawns, cherry tomato basil pasta. Sarah had a latte and I stuck to my usual Hojicha Karigane cold brewed tea. Like HC, Necessary Provisions offers a variety of baked goods including the pandon chiffon cake and cookies. We exercised restraint and decided that we would return for non-dinner food another day.
The fried rice got the thumbs-up from Sarah (and the luncheon meat probably got a separate thumbs-up). I was happy with my pasta too, though it was just a teeny weeny bit unevenly cooked. Drinks were good. I thought my hojicha was stronger here than at HC, which was definitely a good thing.
And since you’re in the area, tarpau some awesome chicken pie from Swisslink, a bakery a few shops down from the café.
Update: Being a deadly mix of compulsive and supportive, we have gone back there two more times. While we would still go back again, we must now caution of the possibility that your coffee may not be that great. We had a nice breakfast (savoury French toast! pancakes! tuna sandwich) but we think it isn’t so nice that whether you get a good coffee depends on which barista is on duty.
