Reading: The Outpost

TheOutpost_Cover

We were at the Singapore Art Book Fair at Gillman Barracks and The Outpost Issue no. 3 was one of the reading material we picked up.

It aims to be a magazine of possibilities and is a great insight into the Arab world. Published from Beirut, it reports, analyzes and dreams of possible future for the region. Its ambition and nerve are touching, and its sense of optimism a necessary balance for today’s weary.

You get insight, narrative and beautiful photography. My heart broke a little, reading the piece on counter-cartographic maps on the Palestine-Israel conflict.

This was not a magazine I knew about, and reading it, my world felt wider and narrower at the same time, and my ambivalence softer and harder all at once.

A Treat To End 2013 With: JAAN

Ravioli

This year, we decided our Christmas meal shall be taken after the event, seeing that we were tending to the shop and we hated battling crowds anyway. I should admit that JAAN was chosen because of the view from the restaurant, and some blind faith in its food, having been there once many years ago.

We did not have any preconceived notions of the food, but we were blown away by how creative and how well-executed the dishes were. We can feel the thought that has gone into each dish, even if we sometimes were not exactly sure about every thing that has gone onto the plate. I was especially wowed by the ravioli. I thought it was going to be a simple dish, but it had so many elements, and was so well put together. Siew had the best ham in her appetiser, and was very impressed by the Kagoshima pork. Along the way, we were suitably entertained by the various complements served to us.

When I got back, I began reading more about the chef and the restaurant.

It was an awesome meal to end the year with, and we were thankful we made the time for this.
